Third-party Presidential Candidate

The Washington Post joins the discussion about the potential for a third-party candidate — they’re against it. An independent candidate couldn’t win, if they did win they couldn’t govern and just my running they would reduce the legitimacy of the winner. That latter argument is peculiar. By extension, you could argue that the Republicans should not nominate a candidate because a contest would undermine the legitimacy of the President.

But then, this is not so much the Washington Post as it is the American Enterprise Institute and the Brookings Institution (the affiliations of the authors).
